From Church Relations- A Humble Brag

Some of us are old enough to remember when homosexuality was scandalous, and being identified as bi, gay, lesbian, or trans was shameful and scornful.

Thankfully, that has changed to a remarkable degree, both in North America and in most countries of the world. Indeed, entertainers, entrepreneurs, politicians, and professional athletes openly identify as members of the queer community. The list is long, but includes Tim Cook, Ben Whishaw, Billie Jean King, Billy Porter, Kristen Stewart, Neil Patrick Harris, Wanda Sykes, Lady Gaga, and Kate McKinnon.

We're not all rich, talented, or famous (obviously). But when we celebrate Pride Month in June, we're honoring the diverse, inclusive, and dynamic contributions of countless individuals in both the church and society. We can make a difference, in fact, we already are.

When we gather for Kampmeeting at Bon Secours Retreat Center in July (see Kampmeeting.com), we'll be showcasing the talents and characteristics that make us unique, vibrant, and significant. Come prepared to witness and demonstrate the creativity God gave us when He placed us in this time and place.

Fifty years ago, Mac Davis had a hit country music song with the words, "Lord, it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way." We may be a long way from perfection, but we can be proud of who we are and what we mean to each other and to God.
