A Song to Help Us Feel Less Alone

Sometimes we write something just to get it out—to put words to an experience we’re still working through. That’s how this song began for a member of Kinship Germany.

Writing it was part of a personal healing process. Sharing it came later, with the thought that someone else might hear it and find encouragement.

The songwriter prefers to remain anonymous. There’s no wish for attention or recognition, just a hope that something born out of a difficult experience might help another person.

The first lyrics were more personal, speaking specifically to the experience of being gay and Adventist.

But as the song took shape, the songwriter began thinking about queer people in other religious communities who might recognize the same struggle: trying to be yourself in a setting that insists you should be someone else. For some, that has included conversion therapy or other attempts to change their sexuality.

The lyrics grew to make room for those stories, too.

Even the sound took some thought. The songwriter wanted the music to carry the emotion without being dismissed by religious listeners who might object to a heavier style before hearing the words. You can’t please everyone, but you can try to give the song a chance to reach people.

And the people who matter most here are those who have lived through something similar. The song wasn’t written to win an argument. It began with a need to work through something painful, and it’s being shared in case it can offer someone else a little comfort.

Perhaps something in it will feel familiar to you. Perhaps it will help you understand what someone you love has been through. There’s room to listen without having to explain your own story.

We’re glad this member felt able to share the song with us. We hope it brings some encouragement to those who need it.

Headphones or a good sound system are recommended if you have them.
