Protests Erupt In Kenya Against Gay MarriageHuffington Post, February 15, 2010
The widespread controversy over gay rights in Africa continues as protests in Mtwapa, Kenya, brought a halt to what was hoped to be the country's first gay marriage. According to the BBC, the wedding had been due to take place Kikambala beach resort. However, two men were arrested by police before the wedding could take place. Three other men were handed to police by members of the public, and are reported to have been beaten. Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya, but until recently has rarely been punished. Recent events in neighboring Uganda, where lawmakers had been considering making homosexuality illegal , leading to widespread criticism, has highlighted tensions about homosexuality in sub-Saharan Africa. South Africa is the only country on the African continent where homosexuality is legal.
