Dutch Educational Institutes Warned
In a letter to all school boards the Dutch Secretary of Education, Ronald Plasterk, has warned educational institutes that it is not allowed to refuse teachers on basis of having a relationship with some one of the same gender. A school which states in its statutes, that having a homosexual relationship is not within its views, distinguishes on basis of civil state and homosexual orientation. And that is, according to Secretary Plasterk, not to be justified on basis of the exceptional provisions of the Law Equal Treatment. The Minister warns that there may be no misunderstanding about this matter. Some (mainly right wing christian) parties claim that the law allows some space for schools to have their own policy towards gay and lesbian teachers who apply for a job or already work for them. The social democrat and liberal parties want the draft to be adapted in a way that it is unequivocally clear that schools are not allowed to reject homosexual teachers. (Source: Nederlands Dagblad)
